    The market

Why LaGrange Is a Strong Short-Term Rental Market

LaGrange is a small village in southern Lorain County, west of Cleveland. Short-term demand here is driven by people with a reason to be in the area: weddings and events, family visits, and trips to Oberlin and the rest of Lorain County.

    1. Weddings and events book whole homes for families and wedding parties, so a large house near a venue can fill its best weekends far in advance.

    2. Family visits and graduations around Lorain County bring groups who want more room than a hotel offers.

    3. For a large home, clear photos, accurate sleeping arrangements and fast replies decide which group books it.

    Rules & taxes

Ohio Lodging Tax Rules for LaGrange Rentals

Ohio's lodging taxes depend on how many sleeping accommodations an operator rents. These are the state rules from the Ohio Administrative Code and Revised Code. We did not find an official LaGrange or Lorain County short-term rental page, so check local rules and lodging tax with the village and the county.

    • A whole house counts as one sleeping accommodation

Under Ohio Administrative Code rule 5703-9-64 (effective December 12, 2024), a cabin, house or other stand-alone structure rented in its entirety is one sleeping accommodation, and five or more such structures are treated as a "hotel" for sales tax purposes. If rooms inside a structure are rented separately, each room counts on its own.

    • Transient guests: stays under 30 days

A transient guest is one who rents a sleeping accommodation for less than thirty consecutive days. Stays of more than thirty consecutive days are not taxed as transient lodging if the rooms are actually and continuously occupied, or paid for with a right to occupy, for that time.

    • Local lodging taxes

Ohio law lets a municipal corporation or township levy a lodging excise tax of up to 3% on lodging furnished by a hotel to transient guests, on top of the state sales tax, and lets a board of county commissioners levy its own lodging excise tax.
